The series is set in the post-war world some 500 to 500 years later, which destroyed civilization. Many elements of technology, such as electric and ground vehicles, have survived this apocalypse, but society has now turned away from guns, resulting in a reliance on turmoil weapons and crossbows.

The area, which covers several states between the Kingdom Mountains and the Mississippi River, is known as Bandland, [1] a feudal society has developed to fill the power-saving power gap. Barons control land and monopoly over commodities such as opium and fuel, trade among themselves to maintain peace. Each baron's service is offered by a widespread workforce of slaves named Cogs, as well as a prostitute named Doll. A baroness maintains power through a corpse of young men and women called cut-ppers: highly trained and loyal warriors, who are prohibited from marrying and producing children, so as not to divide their loyalty. Done. Each Clipper Force is led by a regent.

There are several groups outside the Baron's strict classification. Gypsies are the most common, most illegal humanitarian robbers who resort to stealing from overseas commercial convoys but live in some organized groups. The King and his men control the aquatic trade in the kings and beyond, and they are considered a neutral party in the struggle for the power of the Barons. A thrilling religious movement called the Totemist also appears on the edge of society, living in isolated communities and practicing a variety of idolaters. The widow guides a revolutionary group of feudal fighters from her late husband's land. Although his colleagues nominally acknowledge him as Baron, they do not respect him, and contempt is mutual.

Little is known about the world beyond Badland, but it gives the impression that it is more politically stable and environmentally stable than Badland. It is believed that the epicenter of Azra is located outside the equatorial city of Badland, but most reject it as legendary.
